About Cape Cod Volunteers

Cape Cod Volunteers is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to link people with meaningful opportunities for volunteering on Cape Cod. We do this by informing Cape Codders—residents and visitors alike—about the many volunteer opportunities, programs, and agencies that exist in our community, and by helping people identify their own interests, skills, talents, and passion for service to the community. The vision of Cape Cod Volunteers is to create a network of organizations and opportunities that will inform, inspire, and engage people of all ages and backgrounds in strengthening our community through volunteering.

Through resources including a website, regional Volunteer Opportunity Centers, community networking, and training around volunteerism, Cape Cod Volunteers will promote, encourage, and engage more people to do good works through a simple message: There is no better feeling than building a better community – and world. While volunteers 'give back,' they also find a big bonus – through their community work, they get back so much more than they ever thought possible.

Cape Cod Volunteers was established by the Cape Cod Foundation, and works in partnership with Cape Cod Online and Barnstable County. At the Foundation, Cape Cod Volunteers was guided by an Advisory Committee composed of thirteen nonprofit and community representatives, and chaired by Brian O'Connell, Co-Founder of Independent Sector. The initiative for Cape Cod Volunteers began in 2006 with a community assessment involving over 200 community members and nonprofit representatives. The assessment found that although Cape Codders are generally involved in their communities, there are barriers to volunteering, such as knowing where the opportunities are and finding the right one. These barriers can be especially challenging for older adults who may have recently retired (and are in the next phase of their lives) and/or those who have moved to Cape Cod from other communities.

In November 2010, to better serve the community, Cape Cod Volunteers transitioned into an independent nonprofit organization.

What We Do

Launched in July 2010, this website provides an online matching tool for nonprofits to list their volunteer opportunities and a place for Cape Codders to search for openings that match their interests. The second component is a place to go for those community members who want to spend more time identifying their own interests and how they can find meaningful volunteer opportunities to most effectively serve their local community and Cape Cod. The first Cape Cod Volunteers Volunteer Opportunity Center is NOW OPEN, Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.-12 Noon at the Harwich Community Center (100 Oak Street, just south of Route 6) or by appointment: (508) 362-0242.

Cape Cod Volunteers also promotes volunteering to involve more people in service to their community.

We hope that you will find these resources useful and look forward to working with you to make our community even stronger.
